Change the Game, Don't Just React to It

September 08, 20262 min read

Last football season, I noticed something strange during a game played in a stadium that had just been built. The sun was beating down directly on the visiting team's side of the field, and they'd come prepared with sunshades. I couldn't figure out why, so I looked into it. The stadium had been designed that way on purpose. The home team knew the sun would hit the opposing bench, so they built the field to use it.

Someone studied the variables before they ever stepped on the field, and they built their advantage around them. Most businesses don't do this. They wait to see what conditions show up, then react.

The Market Doesn't Control You. It Changes the Game You're Playing.

Conditions shift constantly, prices move, demand changes, competition increases. None of that is unusual. What's unusual is treating those shifts as something that happens to you instead of something you can design around, the way a team studies a stadium before they ever play in it.

The businesses that struggle most aren't the ones facing hard conditions. They're the ones still running last year's playbook against conditions that have already changed underneath them.

Your Data Already Has the Variables in It

You don't need to guess what's shifting. Look at your own numbers: what's actually changing among the people you serve, what's growing, what's slowing down, what's showing up that wasn't there a year ago. Most businesses are sitting on more strategic information than they're using, because they're too busy reacting to look at what the data is actually telling them.

The question isn't "what's the market doing to me." It's "what do I know about these conditions that I can build an advantage around."

Opportunity Engineering, Not Opportunity Waiting

Instead of waiting to see what opportunities show up, ask what opportunities you can actually build based on what you already know. That's a different posture entirely, not reactive, designed.

You already have the variables. The businesses that pull ahead aren't the ones with better luck. They're the ones who looked at the stadium before the game started.

Studying your own variables before the conditions force your hand is precise, strategic work, and it's where I focus with clients.
